St. Patrick's Celebration

I was with my friends in Ann Arbor, Michigan celebrating St. Patrick's Day. One thing I noticed to most people, it didn't really matter much that this was Monday and drinking so much beer (not irish at all) but it almost is like a CULTURE SHOCK even to Americans because it is suppose to be a religious celebration by Christians (Roman Catholics) to honor St. Patrick (Patron Saint of Ireland) by attending Mass and Parade.

How did alcohol get in to the equation? And Why is St. Patrick changed to St. Paddy?

Most people just dont realize why this is celebrated in the first place and why it is so much important to a lot of people.

Please don't ruin it.
